OCEAN CITY MD July 20 2013 — A former Ocean City police officer and candidate for Worcester Sheriff was arrested in connection with an illegal sale of an assault rifle, State Police said.
Maryland State Police on July 17 charged David L. Catrino, 45, of West Ocean City, with unlawful sale or transfer of a regulated firearm, and four counts of assault weapons violations. Police arrested Catrino on July 15 at his place of employment, the Sherwood Ford car dealership in Salisbury.
Catrino was transported to the Wicomico Detention Center where he was held on $50,000.00 bond. A jail representative said Catrino posted the bond the same day.
State Police said last month, investigators from the Wicomico County Narcotics Task Force and the Worcester County Criminal Enforcement Team received information about an illegal sale of an AK-47 assault rifle.
After identifying Catrino as the person attempting to sell the firearm, an operation was initiated. At the completion of the operation, investigators obtained an arrest warrant charging David Catrino with the illegal sale of the firearm.
Catrino worked as an Ocean City Police officer from 1994 to 2007. He left his post before his shift ended so he could eat a snack that would help him maintain his blood sugar. Police have maintained they interpreted Catrino's early departure to mean he was quitting.
Catrino sued the town in March 2009, nearly two years after he was fired, alleging that Ocean City Police had violated the Americans with Disabilities Act by denying him reasonable accommodation of regularly scheduled meals for his type II diabetes. A jury rejected that claim.
After leaving Ocean City Police, Catrino later found employment as a police officer in Snow Hill. He was hired in January 2010 and resigned that September, said Snow Hill Police Chief Kirk Daugherty.
Catrino also unsuccessfully ran for Worcester County Sheriff in 2010 as a Republican. “The evolution of the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office will require leadership and accountability to protect our families,” he said in a YouTube campaign video posted Aug. 11 , 2010.
