Baltimore MD July 20 2013 A Baltimore City school police officer fired into a vehicle Thursday while responding to a report of an armed robbery, city school officials said.
City school officials said in a statement that the police-involved shooting occurred on East Patapsco Avenue when officers approached a car that was identified by a citizen as containing the suspect in the robbery, which they said took place in nearby Anne Arundel County.
According to the statement, officers called for police support and headed toward the car when "the driver backed the vehicle up in the officers' direction and one of the officers discharged his weapon into the rear of the vehicle."
The driver sped away, the statement said, and police had not received any reports of injuries as of Thursday evening.
Baltimore police are handling the investigation, school officials said.
Sgt. Clyde E. Boatwright, president of the Fraternal Order of Police No. 5, which represents the school police force, said the last officer-involved shooting was in October 2010, when a city school police officer was responding to a citizen report of a robbery.
City school officers primarily police schools, but as a sworn force have citywide jurisdiction.
"Today's incident further solidifies our officers' commitment to the safety of the citizens of Baltimore," Boatwright said. "Criminals need to understand that if you're involved in criminal activity, our officers will bring you to justice."
