PHENIX CITY, Alabama June 24 2013 -- The Russell County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two of its corrections officers and fired another for reported sexual misconduct with female inmates.
The sheriff’s office began investigating after receiving an anonymous tip from a former inmate on the Russell County Sheriff’s Office website, according to a Ledger-Enquirer report.
Jacob Brent Phelps and James Blain were arrested Wednesday and charged with felony sexual misconduct with an inmate, which upon conviction carries a penalty of one to 10 years in prison, Sheriff Heath Taylor said during a Thursday press conference, the newspaper reported.
Another corrections officer, Charles Tarver, was fired for "inappropriate conversations" involving sexual innuendo with female inmates.
The details of the sexual misconduct were not disclosed and involved physical contact but not sexual intercourse between the two corrections officers and women inmates.
Taylor told the newspaper the suspects admitted to the conduct and security camera recordings provided some evidence against them.
The investigation was launched two months ago.
Both suspects were immediately released on $10,000 bond.
