NATICK MA Dec 23 2012
A Braintree man who authorities said shoplifted at least twice before at the Natick Mall was busted Thursday after he shoplifted at one store and tried to at another.
John Joseph Reddington, 41, also assaulted a woman in his escape attempt, before he was finally stopped by store security, according to a police report filed Friday in Framingham District Court. He was arrested at 8:53 p.m.
On Thursday, a mall security guard told police that he saw Reddington and another, still unidentified man, at the mall and recognized them from thefts at the North Face store on March 29 and Nov. 30. On those dates a $400 and a $200 jacket were stolen, the report said.
"(The security guard) said he saw the men and said ‘Stop, the police are coming. You’re not going to steal from my mall anymore,’ " the report said.
The unidentified man then threw two bags at the security guard and began pushing and kicking him. The pair ran off, and the security guard caught Reddington. The unknown man got away.
During his escape attempt, Reddington knocked a 47-year-old Hopkinton woman to the ground. Police said he was also carrying spring-loaded knife, the report said.
The report said Reddington stole nearly $800 worth of items, including a purse, perfume and sunglasses from Macy’s prior to trying to steal a jacket at North Face.
Police charged Reddington, of 35 Colby Road, with larceny of property worth more than $250, larceny of property worth less than $250, receiving stolen property worth more than $250, attempting to commit a crime, assault and battery, conspiracy to commit a crime and carrying a dangerous weapon.
Reddington pleaded not guilty at his Framingham District Court arraignment on Friday. He was released on $500 bail. He is due back in court on Feb. 5 for a pretrial conference.
