NASHVILLE, Tenn. Aug 10 2013– Four former Vanderbilt University football players have been indicted on charges of aggravated rape and sexual battery.
This comes after the investigation into the June 23 sexual assault of a 21-year-old Vanderbilt University co-ed inside a campus dormitory.
Those charged include 20-year-old Brandon Vandenburg, 19-year-old Corey Batey, 19-year-old Brandon Banks and 19-year-old Jaborian McKenzie.
All four defendants are each charged with five counts of aggravated rape and two counts of aggravated sexual battery. Vandenburg is additionally charged with one count of tampering with evidence and one count of unlawful photography.
Metro Police said the four defendants are charged with raping the unconscious victim inside Vandenburg's room at Gillette House dorm in the early morning hours of Sunday, June 23.
The university was made aware of the situation when officials observing the dorm's hallway surveillance recordings for an unrelated situation saw concerning behavior by the defendants.
Vanderbilt dismissed the players June 29 and kicked them off campus pending the investigation by the Metro Nashville Police Department's sex crimes unit.
Metro officers arrested Batey at his residence in Nashville on Friday. He was taken to General Hospital for mandatory blood testing required of someone charged with rape. Batey will then be transferred to Metro Jail.
Efforts are underway to bring Vandenburg, Banks and McKenzie into custody.
