West St Paul MN Aug 9 2013 A trio of Walmart security guards confronting a suspected shoplifter in West St. Paul got an eyeful of pepper spray from the encounter, prosecutors say.
The woman they tried stopping, Kendra Ann Dornbusch, got away but was picked up by police in Cottage Grove on another warrant a few days later. She was charged Aug. 2 in Dakota County District Court with felony robbery. As of Wednesday, Dornbusch, 27, of South St. Paul, remained jailed with bail set at $30,000. The incident took place shortly after 10 p.m. July 28. Store security officers saw the woman concealing makeup and other merchandise in her purse and personal bag, then return the items using a receipt from another store, according to the criminal complaint against her. When she left the store, three officers approached her and asked her to come back inside. Instead, she began to flee while "spraying a substance in the air" that made the officers' eyes and throats burn, the charges say. Dornbusch told police she paid for the items in question, and used pepper spray against the three officers because she didn't know who they were and they were grabbing her. The officers said they clearly identified themselves and made no aggressive moves. Video surveillance shows they didn't try to touch her until she bolted away and sprayed them, according to the charges. Dornbusch pleaded guilty to petty misdemeanor theft in Ramsey County in July. Her next court appearance on the robbery charge is set for Nov. 11.
