Loss prevention personnel at Walmart on West Edgar Road in Linden observed Renier Feliciano Jr., 32, of Woodbridge, and Alexis Fontanez, 37, of Perth Amboy allegedly load a desktop computer valued at $998 into a shopping cart and attempt to leave the store without paying for it.
When store security approached the two men, they abandoned the shopping card and ran through the parking lot. Feliciano allegedly turned towards the security officer and showed him a knife in a threatening manner, authorities said. Feliciano continued to run, but was apprehended by Linden Police patrol officer Anneesah Jones.
Fontanez jumped into his car and drove away, but he was stopped by additional officers and arrested. Police recovered a hypodermic needle from the car, authorities said.
Both men were charged with robbery and weapons offenses and held in lieu of $100,000 bail pending a court date at Union County court. Feliciano was also charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, and Fontanez was additionally charged with possession of a hypodermic needle. Feliciano suffered a cut on his hand during the incident and was treated at police headquarters by the Linden Fire Department ambulance.
The charges against both men are merely accusations; they are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
