Galveston police credit two Kroger store clerks for the arrest of a shoplifting suspect who injured an off-duty police officer while fleeing the store.
The suspect, Sherman Johnson, 22, is being held Wednesday at the Galveston County Jail, charged with two counts of robbery and one count of assault on a public servant, jail records show. A judge denied bail on a motion to revoke probation charge.
Galveston police officer Hector Dominguez was working a security job at the Kroger store, 5730 Seawall Boulevard, when two employees spotted a man shoplifting items from the store, GPD Lt. Michael Gray said in a press release.
Dominguez and store managers escorted Johnson to a business office upstairs, where he "was initially cooperative and answering questions," according to the release. "But he suddenly stood up and shoved Officer Dominguez into a wall."
When Johnson tried to run by the officer and was grabbed, the suspect pushed Dominguez down a flight of stairs, injuring the officer's leg, Gray said.
Kroger managers Tom Herring and Darrell Argo grabbed a pair of handcuffs from the officer and chased Johnson to the Best Western motel next door, where they caught up with him on a second-floor breezeway. Johnson continued to struggle as they tried to handcuff him, biting each of the employees before he could be subdued, according to the press release.
The employees held the suspect until patrol officers arrived.
Dominguez was taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston for treatment of his leg injury. Herring and Argo were treated at the scene.
Galveston police tipped their hats off to the employees in the news release: "The Galveston Police Department would like to thank Tom Herring and Darrell Argo for their assistance in capturing this violent individual."
