Mesa AZ Jan 14 2013 A man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of shoplifting $2,500 worth of merchandise at Home Depot stores and returning them for gift cards, Mesa police said.
Gerald Wayne Armstrong, 39, ran the scheme between Christmas Eve and Jan. 6 at several Home Depot stores in Mesa and Gilbert, according to a court document. He was helped by an unnamed male accomplice, police said.
The last theft occurred at a Home Depot in Mesa off Crimson Road and Southern Avenue, where they tried to return $600 worth of goods but were turned down, police said.
Armstrong was arrested on five counts of organized retail theft.
Police said Armstrong admitted returning or attempting to returning the unpaid merchandise, and that a third unnamed individual planned and kept invoices of the incidents.
