Police took the boy to the police station, called his mother and released him to her pending further investigation.
Security for the robbed Bank of America called police when they spotted the boy on cameras inside the bank about 3 a.m. today, according to investigators.
The glass doors into a vestibule with a 24-hour ATM were not damaged. But inside the vestibule, the glass front door into the bank was shattered.
"A bicycle was observed at the front door, and the glass was broken," a release issued by the Southfield Police Department says. "Officers made entry into the building and located a juvenile suspect. The suspect was found to have property from the bank upon his person. He was subsequently arrested."
Workers replaced the glass, and service to customers was not disrupted, according to bank employees.
Bank of America spokeswoman Diane Wagner said the bank is not releasing details about the attempted heist.
"This is an unfortunate incident," Wagner said today. "We do have security measures in place and take any attempt of burglary to our banking centers seriously."
Bank of America customer Evan Blue, 24, of Oak Park, Mich., was shocked when he arrived at the bank today to hear about the break-in – and the fact that the accused culprit is so young.
"They should be watching cartoons or playing basketball or doing something constructive with their time," Blue said of children the boy's age.
