NEW ALBANY IN July 10 2013 — After being arrested following a shoplifting claim Tuesday, a Georgetown woman fled from a New Albany Police Department patrol car, slipped out of handcuffs and ran through a parking lot before being taken into custody a second time.

Ashton M. Day, 25, was found at the Vincennes Street Dollar General store about 12:30 p.m. by a NAPD officer, who had been called to the scene on a shoplifting call.

A store employee told police that Day was seen in the laundry aisle placing items into her purse before police were contacted.

NAPD Maj. Keith Whitlow said Day had returned most of the items to the employee before police arrived, and that she had remained at the store after being approached by store staff because the employee had her identification.

When police arrived Day became hysterical and said that she did not want to go to jail, Whitlow said.

She reportedly stole $33 worth of clothing and $11.50 in miscellaneous items.

She has been preliminarily charged with C felony escape, D felony theft and A misdemeanor resisting law enforcement.
