Osceola County FL July 10 2013 Four people – two teens and two young adults – are accused in two shooting deaths linked to the same weapon – a 45-caliber Hi-Point carbine used in random shootings across Osceola County in recent weeks, officials announced today.
Konrad Schafer, 15, of Kissimmee fatally shot 17-year-old David Guerrero as the older teen was waiting for a bus early June 26 in Kissimmee, police said.
Then a 20-year-old suspect, David Damus of Kissimmee, shot and killed 22-year-old Eric Roopnarine with the same rifle during a home invasion in Poinciana on July 3, authorities announced.
Konrad, Damus and two other suspects — Sebastian Muriel, 20, Victoria Rios, 17 — thought Roopnarine had money, according to police.
So Roopnarine was tricked into thinking he was going to have sex with Victoria, a runaway. But the suspects forced their way into Roopnarine home and tried to rob him instead, police said.
According to authorities, Damus shot Roopnarine in the face. Then Konrad, police said, cut Roopnarine's throat.
All four are charged with murder and other crimes in the attack on Roopnarine.
The first fatal shooting – the attack on Guerrero – was for Konrad's personal enjoyment, police said.
"He thought it would be fun to shoot Mr Guerrero," said Kissimmee Police Chief Lee Massie. "This is the type of individuals we put in jail today."
Konrad's father, Lothar Hans Schafer Jr., bought the gun from Mega Gun and Armory in Kissimmee for personal protection. He also bought two boxes of ammo with 50 rounds each.
He stored the gun but his teen took it, police said.
Police have interviewed Schafer but have not filed charges.
Authorities said they made the arrests just as the suspects were trying to get more ammo.
