ESCAMBIA COINTY, Ala July 7 2013 - The Escambia County, Alabama Sheriff’s Office has arrested one of its own on drug charges. Sheriff Grover Smith said a corrections officer has been selling contraband at the county jail to inmates. The illegal activity may have gone unnoticed if not for an ongoing unrelated investigation.
Jane Johnson, 58, worked as a corrections officer at the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton until Wednesday night, July 3, 2013. That’s when she was arrested for two counts of possession of a controlled substance, one count of drug trafficking and violation of Alabama’s ethics law.
“She’s been bringing in controlled substance and other items that are contraband in violation of Alabama state law into the jailhouse and delivering them to inmates,” said Escambia County Sheriff, Grover Smith.
Smith said Johnson Brought in pills, cocaine and other contraband. The violations were uncovered during an unrelated, joint investigation at the jail by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation (ABI) and the US Marshall’s Service. That investigation involved suspicion of a person impersonating an attorney to gain access to prisoners.
“In the process of interviewing several of the inmates, information came out that we had a C. O. (Corrections Officer) that was delivering contraband,” Smith said.
Sheriff Smith says Johnson’s been working for his department for several years and there’s really no way to tell how long this has been going on.
“Only she would know. Personally I know Ms. Johnson and like her,” commented Smith. “She’s a very pleasant lady and I thought she did a good job, but she went across the line. I mean I’m sorry for her, but she’s going to be prosecuted.”
For her own protection, Johnson is being held at the Baldwin County Jail. Right now she is being held without bond. Since his jail also houses federal prisoners, Sheriff Smith said the US Marshall’s Service plans to present the case to a federal Grand Jury as well.
