CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. July 4 2013– The body of a man who drove off from a Chesterfield checkpoint was found in Falling Creek Wednesday morning, according to Chesterfield Police.
Police said the man, who did not have a driver’s license, drove off after officers told him to pull over at the checkpoint earlier Wednesday on Iron Bridge Road at Burnt Oak Drive.
Police followed the man’s car into the Ivy Walk Apartments. By the time police caught up to the vehicle, they said it was empty. Soon thereafter, police said they heard yelling from the creek.
Rescue crews were able to pull the passenger, 48-year-old Norman Wills, from the water. The body of the driver, identified only as a 58-year-old man, was recovered about 11 a.m.
Wills is charged with fleeing from a law enforcement officer and possession of a controlled substance. Police said they would release the driver’s name once his family had been notified of the death.
