A substitute teacher committed sex crimes with a 13-year-old girl, according to the Pitt County Sheriff's Office.
Christopher Brooks Rhodes, 28, was charged with statutory rape/sex offense and indecent liberties with a child. More charges were expected, investigators said. Deputies arrested Rhodes Friday afternoon at his Bishop Drive home in Greenville.
Rhodes began working as a substitute teacher for the Pitt County school system in December of 2011, according to a district spokesperson.
The alleged sex crimes did not occur on school property, deputies said. It was unknown whether Rhodes ever taught the alleged victim.
Rhodes worked at D.H. Conley High, Farmville Central High, G.R. Whitfield Middle, H.B. Sugg Elementary, Sam D. Bundy Elementary, Wahl-Coates Elementary and Wintergreen Primary, the school district spokesperson said. Rhodes was suspended from his position on Jan. 3.
Rhodes was in the Pitt County Detention Center under a $500,000 bond.
