MOBILE, Alabama May 14 2013 – Four Fonde Elementary School students were arrested and suspended for the remainder of the school year on Friday, May 10, after a fight that resulted in a teacher being hit in the face, according to Mobile County school officials.
The female teacher, who was not identified, was hit during an attempt to break up a fight between the students in the school’s gymnasium, Mobile Police Department spokesman Cpl. Christopher Levy said on Monday.
“The teacher blew the whistle for them to stop and they didn’t,” he said. And when she intervened, she was subsequently hit, causing minor injuries that did not require hospital treatment, he said.
Due to their age, the students’ names could not be released.
Fonde Elementary is located at the intersection of Cottage Hill and Azalea roads in west Mobile.
Nancy Pierce, spokeswoman for the Mobile County Public School System, said the students – two boys and two girls – were all in the 5th grade, but it was unknown if the victim was their teacher, or another faculty member. The woman was not at school on Monday, she said.
“It’s something that teachers do,” Pierce said. “I’m a former teacher and I’d probably try to break up a fight, too, and get to the kids before they could hurt each other.”
