STORM LAKE, Iowa April 19 2013
Storm Lake Police Assistant Chief Todd Erskine says police were called to campus on Tuesday afternoon because Buena Vista University Campus Security had a report of a detonation of a homemade explosive device.
Erskine says security officials told them that on Monday at 10:20 p.m., BVU student, 21-year-old Matthew Hanson of Villisca, Iowa allegedly detonated an explosive device on campus.
They say he was immediately taken into custody.
After an investigation police allege that on Monday, Hanson made a explosive device using a flameless heater from a military "Meals Ready to Eat" kit and placed it in a glass bottle.
A chemical reaction took place and the bottle and its contents blew up.
Erskine says Hanson allegedly placed the device 10-feet near Swope Hall and upon detonation, it spread broken glass and debris in an area approximately 15-feet in diameter.
Police say no injuries were reported.
They searched Hanson's dorm room and vehicle where additional evidence in connection with the investigation was located and seized.
Erskine says Hanson was charged with Possession of an Explosive Device and Reckless Use of an Explosive Device.
He was booked in the Buena Vista County Jail on a $3,000 cash bond.
Public Safety Director Mark Prosser states, "During the investigation no evidence, information, or statements were collected that in any way connected this incident to the terrible bombing incident which occurred in Boston earlier in the day. It appears in our investigation that this incident was the result of an incredibly irresponsible and dangerous idea the student had on Monday evening."
Storm Lake Police were assisted by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and the Iowa State Fire Marshal's Office.
