Deland Fla  April 7 2013 A woman caught shoplifting at a DeLand Walmart ran from an off-duty deputy while carrying her 2-year-old daughter and was later found hiding under metal sheets in the yard of a business, DeLand police said.
Shaylynn Suckel, 22, South Daytona, was found with the toddler, who had several minor cuts, police said.
Suckel is charged with an act that could result in the physical or mental injury of a child, obstructing an officer without violence and petty theft, a DeLand police arrest report shows.
Police investigations determined Suckel walked into the Walmart at 1699 N. Woodland Blvd. in north DeLand shortly before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. She was seen selecting baby merchandise valued at $72.07, police said.
Suckel hid the goods in her purse and walked out of the Walmart, police said. As a Walmart employee tried to stop her, Suckel ran to the parking lot. The store employee saw an off-duty deputy and asked for help in stopping Suckel, according to the report.
Suckel ran with her 2-year-old in hand and disappeared behind a neighboring business at 1607 N. Woodland Blvd. DeLand officers arrived on scene and searched 30 minutes for Suckel and eventually found her with her child lying under some metal sheets, police said.
Police also discovered the area where Suckel hid had many sharp industrial-type objects and other hazardous materials, the report said.
Suckel was released Wednesday from the Volusia County Branch Jail after posing $2,000 bail. She could not be reached.
The child was turned over to the Department of Children & Families, police said.
