Guam Dec 26 2012 Security officers began patrolling Guam Friday night and, so far, haven't reported any criminal activity, said Department of Education Deputy Superintendent Robb Malay yesterday.
The procurement of guards was enacted last week, after Gov. Eddie Calvo signed an emergency declaration allowing the Department of Education to take measures to improve school security.
That order was a response to the recent string of copper wire thefts at six school campuses, leaving several classrooms in those schools without air conditioning.
Those thefts have cost DOE about $70,000, according to Pacific Daily News files.
Citing security reasons, Malay declined to say how many patrol officers there were or where they were located.
While the department currently is relying primarily on the patrol officers, Malay said the department was planning to explore what other security options are available for the schools.
"We're going to look at what's available and achieveable," he said.
The emergency procurement period lasts for 30 days. Malay said during that time, the department will make a determination on prolonging the guards' presence at the schools.
