Providence RI Feb 24 2013 A Providence elementary school teacher was arrested in Florida.
David Jones is accused of taking a 15-year-old former student with him to Miami Beach without permission from the parents. A police report said the two exchanged text messages that were sexually explicit.
Jones, 56, was charged by Miami Beach police Thursday with "interference with custody," a third-degree felony in Florida that makes it a crime for someone to take or entice "any minor or any incompetent person" from custody of parents, guardians, or a public agency in charge of the child's care.
Jones was being held Friday in Miami-Dade County on $9,000 bond, a jail official said.
The Providence School Department said in a statement that Jones was immediately placed on leave.
A spokeswoman said the department will be doing an internal investigation.
