BRANDON Fla Dec 24 2012
A wild parking lot shooting left one man dead and two others injured early Saturday in Brandon.
Detectives with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office are still sorting through the details to determine if any charges are warranted.
"It was an incredibly chaotic scene," explained Samara Sodos, a spokesperson with HCSO.
The incident occurred outside the Boomerang Martini Bar on Town Center Blvd. just after 3 a.m. Investigators say it was triggered by a fight that broke out over a woman's missing purse.
The item belonged to the girlfriend of 28-year-old Louis Kuilan-Maysonet of Tampa. According to witnesses Maysonet and an unidentified man got into an altercation about the purse that spilled out into the parking lot.
That's when Maysonet allegedly flashed a handgun and began firing away. Christopher Gonzalez-Cartagena, 29, was hit several times. He was transported to Tampa General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
After hearing the gunfire an armed security guard employed by Boomerangs ordered Maysonet to stop. That's when according to witnesses Maysonet turned his gun on Andre Jennings.
"Because this armed security was in fear for his life and [the] lives of others he shot the man," Sodos added.
Jennings, who has a concealed weapons permit, hit Maysonet when he returned fire. The man who apparently started the disturbance was transported to Brandon Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
"It is senseless a fight over a purse ended up leading to a death," Sodos said. "But that's just the reality of what happened here."
An innocent bystander who had nothing to do with the argument suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. Alejandro Salavarrieta, 22, was taken to TGH for treatment.
Saturday's violence was not the first time a fatal shooting had occurred at that location. In October 2007 – when it was called Club Fluid – a woman was shot and killed.
Karen Taylor-Williams, a 36-year-old innocent bystander, was killed when a suspect later identified as Tyrone Grimes opened fire. He was arrested a few days later.
Grimes was convicted in 2009 and sentenced to life in prison.
Patricia Thomas shops often in Brandon and was surprised to see the contingent of law enforcement on scene Saturday morning.
"I just feel sorry for the people involved," Thomas said. "It is scary because you don't think it happens in this area. I was shocked."
So far no charges have been filed as the investigation continues.
