FORT KNOX, KY Feb 23 2013 – A Fort Knox soldier and his spouse died of gunshot wounds early Friday morning at their on-post residence, according to the Fort Knox Public Affairs Office.
One of the individuals was deceased when military police arrived. The other was given first aid but died at the scene.
Two children were home when the shootings happened. Neither was injured. The children are currently in the custody and care of the Kentucky Department for Community Based Services.
According to a press release issued by the post, Fort Knox Police responded to the residence around 3:40 a.m. after receiving a 911 call from the home. The four responding officers heard gunfire inside the residence upon arrival. They entered the residence and found two individuals, both with gunshot wounds.
Special Agents from the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command, commonly referred to as CID, immediately responded to the scene. According to Chris Grey, the spokesperson for CID, the initial investigation points to a domestic dispute, but a final determination will not be made until a thorough investigation is conducted.
The names of the dead are being withheld until 24 hours after their families have been notified. Post officials want to assure the Fort Knox community that there is no existing threat to the public.
A spokesperson for Fort Knox said the deceased soldier served with the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division.
