PENSACOLA, Florida Dec 24 2012
What Dorothea Vega is accused of doing sounds like something from a horror movie. "There was an alarm system on the victims room where if the victim came out of the room the alarm went off and was not allowed to be out of the room except for doing chores."
The victim, a middle school student, told a school resource officer she was beaten with toilet plungers, brooms, sticks, shoes, rulers, wooden spoons and open and closed fists. "The child was not allowed to bathe or eat."
According to deputy Matt Baxter the young girl would use the school restroom to clean-up for school. "The child was forced to take prescription medication in order to try and control her behavior."
Vega worked for the the Escambia county school system according to superintendent Malcolm Thomas. "She worked week to week. Just a few hours each week. She was not a full time employee at all."
Vega was immediately suspended from her position at Ensley Elementary School. She had only worked here for about a hear and a half trying to get parents more involved in school activities.
"She will not report to work until these matters are cleared," says Thomas. "If she is found guilty of this, these are disqualifying offenses and we don't allow people in Florida to work who are guilty of these offenses."
Vega is charged with torturing a child, battery and cruelty to a child. She remains in the Escambia county jail.
For at least four months the victim endured what investigators called "deplorable" conditions. Tonight she is in protective custody.
