ANDERSON, S.C. Feb 5 2013(AP) - Residents of South Carolina's Upstate are receiving a phone message that warns of prison time for not showing up for jury duty, but court officials said they don't know who's behind it.
WYFF reports the recording claims to be from the "National Justice Center" and says that for failing to appear for recent jury duty people should make arrangements to pay a $500 fine or serve a 30-day jail sentence.
A third option invites listeners to tell their 10 most gullible friends to call the phone number and try tricking them into thinking it was a real jury duty notification.
Anderson County Clerk of Court Richard Shirley said many don't listen to the whole message, so about a dozen have contacted his office worried they're in legal trouble.
