It happened shortly after 8 o'clock.
KMBC-TV reports that an Olathe Police officer was searching for a vehicle driving the wrong way in the area when he spotted the car in the parking lot of the Dollar General.
The officer confronted the suspect inside of the store and told investigators that the man pulled a gun on him.
The officer fired, striking the suspect who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have not identified the suspect, but say he is a man in his 20's. Initial reports of someone else being hurt were inaccurate.
