CARTHAGE, Mo. Aug 13 2013— A 22-year-old Carthage man, running from police on Sunday, plunged a knife into his heart, committing suicide in the middle of a street.
Police Chief Greg Dagnan said the name of the man was being withheld pending notification of family.
Police, he said, were alerted shortly before noon that a man, possibly intoxicated, was walking in the 1100 block of South Lyon Street carrying two knives.
Dagnan said officers found the man in the 100 block of West 11th Street. He said officers reported that the man ran when they made contact with him. He then was found in the 100 block of West 10th Street, where he began trying to kill him himself using the knives, Dagnan said.
“Before we could stop him, he had plunged a knife into his heart,” Dagnan told the Globe in a phone interview.
The man was taken by ambulance to Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, where he was pronounced dead from the knife wounds, according to police reports.
Dagnan said the incident happened quickly and left officers stunned by the sudden turn of events.
“None of my officers have ever seen anything like this in their careers, nor have I,” he said.
The incident is still under investigation, Dagnan said.
