GREENWICH NY Aug 5 2013 -- The head teller at the Glens Falls National Bank branch on Main Street was arrested earlier this month for allegedly stealing a local business’s night deposits worth more than $4,000, officials said.
Angela J. Beadle, 48, was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony, after a lengthy investigation by State Police and Cambridge-Greenwich Police into complaints by two Greenwich businesses that night deposits weren’t showing up in their accounts.
The businesses, Tractor Supply Co. and Verizon Wireless, had staff members who claimed they made deposits in the bank’s night deposit box only to be told by the bank the funds were not received, authorities said.
Beadle was charged in connection with two missing deposits from Tractor Supply after she confessed to them, but so far she has not been charged with the Verizon Wireless thefts, according to police.
Each business had three night deposits unaccounted for between April and June, amounting to nearly $8,000.
Night deposits involve money left by depositors at a bank ATM or other bank location after hours, when banks have closed for the day. No one is at the bank to physically receive the money until the next morning — or business day, when deposits are made on the weekend.
The police investigation initially focused on employees of the companies making the deposits.
“We initially thought it was a problem with an employee, but when the other one (company) showed up, we started looking at the bank,” Cambridge-Greenwich Police Chief George Bell said.
As the investigation continued, and records from the bank were subpoenaed, it became apparent to State Police the thefts were occurring after the deposits were made.
There are surveillance cameras on the night deposit area, but Beadle did not explain how she committed the theft or say what was done with the stolen money, authorities said.
Bell said it was his understanding accounting for night deposits was supposed to be a two-person job, per bank policy.
A spokeswoman for Tractor Supply Co. said Monday the company had no comment on the matter, and a call to Verizon Wireless’s owner was not returned Monday.
Blake Jones, a spokeswoman for the bank, would not discuss how the theft occurred or say whether policies or procedures were changed in light of the case.
She said the “customer” involved would be reimbursed, but she had no further comment when it was pointed out police had reports from two bank customers who reported multiple missing deposits.
“The teller is no longer employed by the bank,” she said.
Beadle was released pending prosecution in Greenwich Town Court.
She was arrested by July 19, but no press release was issued, and The Post-Star learned of the case through a tip from a reader.
