Around 7:30 p.m., security at the J.C. Penney at Coastland Center mall said they saw two women leaving the store after stuffing clothes into their purses. When the officers tried to stop the women, one of them ran to her car, while the other, Regina Rena Starks, began swinging her purse at them and fighting them.
The officers said the other woman pulled up in her car and tried to hit one of the officers. Starks grabbed one of the officers in the groin, according to an arrest report.
Starks told her friend to “get the gun,” and the unidentified woman continued to provoke officers, saying she had a gun and would run them over, police said.
Naples police arrived and helped detain Starks while the other woman got away. Starks later identified her accomplice in an interview with detectives, but the woman’s name was redacted from reports.
Police said they found three men’s shirts and a pair of kids shoes in Starks’s bag worth $78. Starks, 34, faces two counts of battery, two counts of resisting a merchant and one count of retail theft.
