Oakland CA Aug 5 2013 A KGO-TV news crew was robbed at gunpoint of camera equipment while accompanied by a security guard in West Oakland in broad daylight, the latest in a spate of holdups in the city targeting the media, authorities said.
The crew and security guard were on the 2700 block of Chestnut Street when they were robbed shortly after 2:30 p.m. Friday by three men, at least one of whom had a gun, police said.
The robbers fled with camera equipment. None of the robbery victims was injured.
A station official did not respond to a request for comment.
Several news media workers have been robbed in Oakland in recent months, some in the middle of the day.
In November, a KPIX news cameraman was punched and robbed during a live broadcast outside a high school. Viewers saw the picture being jarred and turned sideways.
The incident prompted KPIX to hire security guards to accompany its crews as they covered stories in Oakland, day or night. One guard working with the station is a former Oakland police officer.
KGO-TV crews have also been shadowed by security guards in Oakland, including when they were covering a fatal officer-involved shooting in East Oakland, the killing of a man near the Oakland-Emeryville border and the shooting death of a dog walker in East Oakland.
In May, thieves stole personal items from a KGO-TV news van at Jack London Square as well as from a car belonging to the crew's security guard, a former San Francisco police officer.
