BRIDGEPORT CT July 31 2013 -- A naked Pennsylvania man's early morning swim in the Long Island Sound at Seaside Park on Sunday ended with a run from police and a shock from a stun gun.
City police charged Joseph Straub, 30, of Scranton, Pa., with breach of peace Sunday after he failed to cooperate with security at the Gathering of the Vibes then ran from officers attempting to get him under control once he got out of the water, said city police spokesman William Kaempffer.
The incident began at about 3:30 a.m. when the festival's security tried to detain Straub, who Kaempffer described as "out of control and possibly under the influence of narcotics."
City Police Lt. William Mayer tired to calm Straub down, but the man ran away, as a dozen police officers and a few security guards chased after him, Kaempffer said.
"He ran around the campground area at full speed and without any sign of tiring," Kaempffer said in a news release.
The chase ended when a security guard confronted Straub and the latter "squared off as if to fight," Kaempffer said. At that point, Officer Thomas Flaherty and Capt. Brian McCarthy told him Straub to get on the ground or they would subdue him with a Taser.
Kaempffer said Straub ignored the warning and was then shocked with an officer's Taser and arrested. He was transported to a city hospital to be checked for injuries.
