An off-duty corrections officer from Essex County, NJ was fired upon in Newark as he got out of his private car, said Acting Prosecutor Carolyn Murray.
The shootings took place about 3 a.m. on Monday.
The officer was approached by three gunman who opened fire missing the officer, said Murray. The officer returned fire shooting striking two of the suspects.
The third suspect fled the scene, said Murray.
Two of the injured suspects were taken to University Hospital in critical condition.
The corrections officer was taken to an area hospital for evaluation.
He was expected to recover.
