JACKSON, Tenn. July 26 2013 --Jackson State Community College recently added two armed police officers to the payroll.
“I've been in law enforcement for eight years,” said Officer Brandon Dorris, one of the new hires.
Both officers have state certification. They get the same privileges as a regular officer. “This is a precautionary measure,” said Dorris. “It's better to have us and not need us than not have us and us not be there.”
The college hopes the officers will deter crime on campus. “We're going to make sure that we're gonna protect our faculty, our staff, our students, our property, to the best of our ability,” said Darron Billings, Director of Environmental Health and Safety.
The officers at Jackson State Community College plan to work closely with the Jackson Police Department. “I think we’re planning on doing some training, cross training with them, so we can get to know their officer, know who’s working this area, “ said Dorris.
The new police officers make some students feel safer. “The way the times are you never know what could happen, and I think this is a step that Jackson State is taking to make us all safe,” said Cameron Byrd, a rising sophomore.
The school said officers will patrol around the clock seven days a week.
“We're not here to cause any trouble for the students,” said Dorris. “We're here to protect them.”
Jackson State Community College plans to hire more campus police officers budget permitting.
