BALLINGER TX July 26 2013 — Cpl. Larry Nitsch, 25, of the Ballinger Police Department, was found dead at his sister’s residence in the 1400 block of Hutchings Avenue early Wednesday.
Nitsch’s fiancée woke up about 7:15 a.m. and found him cold to the touch and called the Police Department, Police Chief Mark McNulty said. He was dead when officers arrived.
“We don’t know what happened, but we don’t believe foul play was involved,” McNulty said.
The body will be sent to the Lubbock Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy, he said.
Nitsch’s sister Meagan Smith and family were out of town Wednesday, McNulty said, adding Nitsch may have been housesitting.
Nitsch, known as L.J., grew up in Winters and began his law enforcement career in Ballinger. He had been with the department for 3½ years and recently was promoted.
“He was a very good officer,” McNulty said. “He was very conscientious and a good worker. He put in a lot of hours and a lot of effort. That’s why he was promoted to corporal.”
Nitsch and his fiancée had plans to get married this week, McNulty said. Police did not release the fiancée’s name.
Nitsch was pronounced dead on the scene by Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Judge Glenda Wood.
The Runnels County Sheriff’s Office assisted.
