Gaithersburg MD July 24 2013 One man lost his leg and two other people were injured when a car plowed through the front of a Sam's Club discount store Tuesday afternoon.
It happened shortly before 1 p.m. at the Sam's in the 600 block of N. Frederick Avenue (Route 355) in Gaithersburg, Md.
Authorities said the 77-year-old driver of a Buick LeSabre was traveling at a high rate of speed when he struck a 31-year-old woman through the parking lot. She was able to push two young children out of the way and received minor injuries, reported News4's Pat Collins.
But the driver kept going until he crashed through two closed metal doors in the front of the building, hitting two men in the food court.
One victim, a 76-year-old man, had his leg amputated in the accident. His injuries are considered life-threatening. He was airlifted to Shock Trauma in Baltimore.
Authorities said the other male victim, 33, has serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the car is at the scene with minor injuries.
Witnesses said that prior to the crash, they saw him honking at another car in a parking space before speeding away from that car.
Authorities said they didn't yet know what led to the incident.
