A former North Carolina state trooper is charged with a Christmas Eve shooting of two hunters he accused of trespassing on a family member's land.
Prosecutors said Friday that Herbert Paul Weissinger is charged with two felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.
Authorities say the 55-year-old former trooper pulled a pistol on a father and son who were using dogs to track bears on state game land that borders property owned by Weissinger's father-in-law.
Forty-two-year-old Thomas Daughety Jr. of Fayetteville was shot in the stomach and the arm. His father, 64-year-old Thomas David Daughety Sr., was shot in the hand while trying to wrestle the gun away from Weissinger.
The Daughetys deny they ever trespassed on the property of Weissinger's relative.
