A loss prevention officer for Sears saw a man hide three pairs of cargo shorts before leaving the store on Sunday, according to Winston-Salem police. The officer followed the man outside the store and talked with him.
The security officer began escorting the man back into the store to call police when the man pulled out a knife and swung it at the officer, according to police.
The officer held up his arm to deflect the blade, which may have been a box cutter, and was stabbed in the arm, police said. The man then stabbed the officer once in the cheek.
The two men wrestled for a few seconds, falling to the ground, before the man ran away on foot.
Police ran a K-9 track, leading to the former Rapers building at the end of Mooney Street off South Stratford Road. No one was there and the track was lost.
The officer was treated at the scene by EMS.
Police ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers 727-2800.
