A federal judge blocked the scheduled execution of a Virginia inmate Monday in order for his appeals to continue.
William Morva was scheduled to be executed August 15.
Morva was in a Blacksburg hospital awaiting trial on previous charges in 2006 when he tried to escape. He overpowered a sheriff's deputy and used the officer's pistol to kill a security guard. He then shot and killed a police corporal during a manhunt, which caused Virginia Tech's campus to go on lockdown.
All inmates are guaranteed federal appeals, if they are set to be executed.
