Anchorage police say they are making progress in their investigation of a shooting outside of a Downtown bar early Friday that left a man in critical condition.
According to APD spokesperson Jennifer Castro, the victim was visiting a relative who works at Bernie's Bungalow Lounge on 7th Avenue and D Street. When the man left the bar shortly before 1 a.m., a vehicle pulled up as he was exiting Bernie's rear gate on 7th.
A male suspect got out of the vehicle and shot the victim, with rounds that Castro says exited "four times in the lower region of his body," before getting back into the vehicle and driving away.
According to Castro, a security guard performed first aid on the victim until medics arrived at the scene and he was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
"A security guard at the bar was able to come out and conduct some lifesaving measures on the victim," Castro said.
APD detective Sgt. Slawomir Markiewicz, the head of the department's homicide unit, says police are reviewing surveillance video from the scene and following a number of leads. Officers have interviewed many witnesses to the shooting at the bar, which was flooded with patrons due to the Fourth of July holiday.
Markiewicz says investigators also plan on speaking with the victim of the shooting, as soon as they can do so.
"We are certainly interested in talking with him and getting information from him," Markiewicz said. "We haven't charged anyone; we haven't arrested anyone and don't have anyone in custody."
Police believe the shooting was intentional and not a random act of violence. Anyone with additional information regarding the incident is asked to call 907-786-8900.
