The imposter visited DW Sports Fitness, in Gelderd Road, Birstall, disguised as a security officer carrying a money box and identification.
Police from the Batley NPT said a supervisor at the store escorted the fraudster to the safe and handed over the cash, which was put into the security box.
The brazen thief then handed over the receipt before leaving the store.
The alarm was raised hours later when the genuine security officer arrived to collect the cash and staff realised they had been conned.
The incident happened at 11am on Tuesday June 25.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101.
