A security officer was injured during the flight out the Niagara Street exit. Tarele T. Haugabook, 1961 Welch Ave., was chased by Lockport Police and court officers and captured about two blocks away in front of the Bond House on Ontario Street.
About 15 law enforcement officers were in the chase and Officer Kevin Lucinski made the collar. The escape occurred during the police shift change, so there were police coming and going. There were a half-dozen court officers and about 10 police officers pursuing in cars.
Haugabook, whose hands were cuffed behind his back during the escape, was taken to Lockport Police Headquarters where he faced escape charges. Court officer John Rodgers was taken to Eastern Niagara Hospital for unspecified injuries.
Police said that Haugabook cut through yards and made it to Corinthia Street before doubling back. He was wearing a red shirt and blue jeans.
“I just saw them flying out in their police cars,” said Michael Tomaino who was on Ontario Street. “They got him in handcuffs.”
Despite having his hands behind his back, Haugabook was running pretty well, according to Capt. Mike Niethe. Court officer Peter Robinson was right behind the fugitive. “(Robinson) was hauling ass,” the captain said. “I couldn’t keep up with him.”
Haugabook was not schackled as he stood before Kloch on a charge of violation of probation. The old charge was second-degree attempted robbery and a new charge was third-degree burglary.
Kloch committed to have the jail times run concurrently and Haugabook could face seven years in prison on those charges.
“I said I was remanding him to county jail and he didn’t like that,” the judge said. “He was handcuffed from behind. My chief securty officer was holding him and the kid started running. He’s a young buck, went around in a circle and went out the door. My security guy was still holding on to him and when he hit that step going down he the guy let go. I understand he (Haugabook) tried to carjack a car.”
Haugabook went north through yards to Ontario Street where he was eventually caught.
