Knoxville TN June 29 2013 The Knox County school system is almost complete with the hiring process for 58 new school security officers and will begin training Monday.
The district is working with the Knoxville Police Department and the Knox County Sheriff's Department to give the officers proper training.
Knox County Schools Chief of Security Gus Paidousis said the officers will be trained in areas including drug recognition, the Amber Alert System and special education.
The officers will be armed and will have the ability to make arrests.
The 58 school security officers are in addition to the existing 17 school resource officers through KPD and 24 through KCSO.
Paidousis said all of the 89 schools in the county will have at least one armed officer with several having multiple officers.
Paidousis said the officers will undergo lengthy background checks.
"They have to develop relationships with parents and teachers and kids. They have to really be a part of the fabric of the school community," Superintendent Dr. Jim McIntyre said.
"The key for us is we wanted people who understand the value of being a role model, who cared about children, who understood that the big mission is education," Paidousis said.
