GREENVILLE, N.C. June 22 2013 - Police say a suspected shooter that fired on four people in and around a Greenville, North Carolina Walmart has been neutralized and is in custody.
Greenville Police Chief Hassan Aden says police fired on the shooter after he turned his weapon on them. Aden says the shooter's condition is unknown. The suspect is reportedly in the hospital undergoing surgery.
Aden says both the Walmart and a nearby law firm are now crime scenes, with shooting victims at both businesses.
CBS affiliate WNCT 9 On Your Side reports it all started just before noon at the Kellum Law Firm on Greenville Blvd. That's where a 9 On Your Side crew found one victim down when they arrived on the scene.
Witnesses told the WNCT crew that a man with a rifle in a bullet proof vest walked up and shot an insurance adjuster who was sitting in a Geico car. Police later clarified the shooter used a shotgun, not a rifle.
A short time later, emergency crews were dispatched to the side entrance of the Walmart near Hooker Road, where a second shooting victim was discovered outside. He's described as an older white male. WNCT reports the victim is injured, but expected to be OK.
There also are reports of at least two other victims at the Walmart. Their conditions are not known at this time.
Dianna Gee with Walmart headquarters in Bentonville, AR, said no one was shot inside the store, but that it happened outside in the parking lot. She added all associates at the Greenville location are safe.
A witness tells WNCT he saw officers as they moved in to get the suspect medical attention. Police reportedly kept telling the suspect to stay down and put his hands up. The witness adds the suspect was still moving around and police were unable to get to him until they slowly moved in with an SUV.
The suspect was then taken into custody.
Sheriff Aden said officers responded within mere minutes of the shooting calls. He added that their training in mass shootings, "likely prevented a larger crime scene with multiple, multiple victims."
