Fred Holmes Jr., 58, was arrested in connection with the incident.
According to police, the situation began as a domestic dispute off-property and then escalated as Holmes threatened a woman with whom he was arguing and disclosed he had some sort of explosive device. Authorities found a device matching the description in a trash can and arrested Holmes.
Columbia Police Chief Clint Mcmurry said, "We've determined that the device was not functional. He was using it merely as a threat to a private individual, another citizen. It was a small plastic container with what, at this time, is an unknown substance, but even if it was a flammable substance it wasn't enough to cause damage or any other type of harm to anyone."
Marion General Hospital is pressing disturbing the peace of a business charges and all charges related to the device, threats, and contributing evidence will be handed over to the district attorney.
