"We had to find out someway," Luther said.
He got his answer by taking matters into his own hands - planting money, taking note of the serial numbers and then installing a hidden camera in his son's bedroom.
The camera was hidden inside a bedside alarm clock and the footage allegedly showed nurse's aid Rhonda Mason, 46, taking the money on two separate occasions.
"When you work all your life, like I have, to try to get ahead, this is really bad for somebody to come in like that - especially someone you trust. And, God, I trusted her," Luther said.
Mason had been taking care of the family's quadriplegic son for the last 12 years.
Luther said it was not just a professional betrayal, but a personal one, too, and the thought alone brings him to tears.
"I love my family, and that includes Michael and his nurse, because you've got to. They're in your house all the time like a member of the family," Luther said.
Mason faces two counts of felony theft, and while the Luther family is making changes, they are not giving up on mankind.
"Oh, no. No, you can't be done trusting people," Luther said.
Police advise to always check out the people you allow into your home then watch them carefully, because you never know what they are capable of doing.
"I just hope we make better decisions. I started using banks more often," Luther said.
Mason was released on bail Wednesday morning. Channel 4 News called her for comment but has not received a call back.
Clarksville police said Mason also worked for another home healthcare provider before working for the Luthers, so anyone with similar concerns should give detectives a call.
