ATLANTA GA June 19 2013 Atlanta police are trying to figure out what led a resident of a senior living community to stab two other residents, one of them fatally.
Mary Oliver, who would have turned 76 years old on Tuesday, was stabbed to death in her bed late Monday night at National Church Residences, an 11-story high-rise apartment building on Myrtle Drive in southwest Atlanta that caters to senior citizens.
"My mother had no business dying a tragic death," said one of Oliver's daughters, Jan Jacobs. "And then for (him) to kick in her door and kill her, I just don't understand that. That's not the way senior citizens are supposed to die."
Police officers were originally called to the complex minutes before Oliver was discovered stabbed to death. A security guard called 911 when another resident, a 70-year-old man, came downstairs bleeding from numerous lacerations to his face and chest. He is expected to survive his wounds, police said.
Officers quickly realized they had two victims and two different crime scenes within the complex.
Atlanta police caught up with the suspect soon afterward. Geary Otis, 64, was covered in blood and carrying two large, bloody kitchen knives, according to Officer Kim Jones, an Atlanta police spokeswoman.
Otis also lives in the complex, said Sgt. Ricardo Vazquez, a homicide detective. Detectives were trying to figure out a motive. They do not believe the suspect and victims knew each other very well.
Police said Otis is in the hospital. When he is released, he will be taken to the Fulton County Jail.
