ARLINGTON, Texas June 13 2013
The Arlington police officers being investigated by the FBI allegedly bought and sold anabolic steroids and may have put other law enforcement in danger by sharing sensitive information with a known drug dealer.
Thomas Kantzos, who has worked for the Arlington Police Department for the past 17 years, was arrested Tuesday and charged with unlawfully providing law enforcement sensitive information by exceeding authorized access to a protected computer.
According to an affidavit, Kantzos bought steroids and HGH from a man who knew Kantzos was a police officer. That man told investigators on at least one occasion he delivered drugs to Kantzos while he was on duty, in uniform and in a marked patrol car.
The witness claimed Kantzos bought the drugs for himself and others, including other Arlington officers.
The charges against him stem from the fact that he allegedly accessed information in law enforcement databases and gave that information to the witness. He provided him with the name of an undercover officer watching him and told him about a tracking device on his vehicle, according to the affidavit.
The FBI had been investigating two other Arlington officers that Kantzos allegedly introduced to the witness. One of those officers, 35-year-old David Vo, committed suicide in a park across from a neighborhood Tuesday.
Vo, a three-year veteran of the force, had been arrested last week and was released.
Officer Craig Hermans was placed on leave but has not yet been arrested. He is also a three-year veteran of the force.
Arlington police said they are cooperating.
"Criminal misconduct by our employees is intolerable as it damages the trust and confidence of those we serve," Chief Will D. Johnson said in a statement. "We will always aggressively pursue the arrest and prosecution of any employee engaged in this sort of behavior."
