Kenneth A. Carter, 51, of Central Nyack was arrested shortly before noon on May 22, Clarkstown police Sgt. Glenn Cummings said. He is charged with making a terrorist threat, a felony.
Carter, listed on the school’s website as a security guard, was facing disciplinary action from school officials when he made the comment to a co-worker earlier that morning, Cummings said.
“In a bit of anger, he expressed to a co-worker that he was going to go home, get his guns and blow the place up,” Cummings said.
The co-worker spoke out about the threat and Clarkstown police responded to the school, taking Carter into custody without incident, Cummings said. The security guard was unarmed at the time of his arrest.
Why Carter was being disciplined was not clear.
Nyack Schools Superintendent James Montesano offered few details on the incident Tuesday.
“As you’re well aware, it’s a personnel matter,” he said. “But there was never any issue with regard to student safety.”
Cummings also noted that students faced no imminent threat.
Montesano was unable to say whether Carter had been terminated or placed on leave.
Reached at his home, Carter referred all questions to his attorney. His attorney could not be reached.
Carter was arraigned in Clarkstown Town Court and later released after posting $1,000 bail. He is to return to court June 17.
Located on Christrian Herald Road, the school serves students in grades nine through 12. Enrollment in 2011, the last year for which data were available on the district’s website, was about 875 students.
