Port Elizabeth South Africa May 26 2013 A security guard died after being driven over twice in the chaos of a botched cash-in-transit heist in Port Elizabeth yesterday.
Another guard was critically wounded as the eight robbers sprayed bullets around wildly at the Caltex petrol station in Zwide.
Panicked passers-by fled to nearby shops for shelter while others took cover behind hawkers' stands on the side of the road.
No money was stolen, but the guards' pistols were taken.
Traffic officials manning a roadblock a kilometre away were seemingly unaware of the drama playing out nearby.
The 35-year-old guard who was killed is from Despatch.
Police would not release his name or that of his wounded colleague until their families had been notified.
The injured security guard underwent surgery last night and is in a stable condition in the Greenacres Hospital.
