Sedwick County KS May 23 2013 A Maize High School teacher was arrested just before 1 a.m. on charges that he made criminal threats at a school sporting event.
In an email to parents, the school's principal wrote that the teacher made "disturbing comments to another staff member about violence toward the school." In addition, the school was searched and there was no indication that the threat was valid.
Sedgwick County jail records show James Stiverson, 39, was booked on charges of criminal threat and is being held on $250,000 bond.
Sedgwick County Sheriff's investigators received a call from Maize Police in regards to comments Stiverson allegedly made to school administrators during a Maize High School soccer game around 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
"Investigators worked through the night after receiving a request for assistance from the Maize School [District] Police Department in reference to the teacher making comments to school administrators during a sporting event on May 21 at 6 p.m," said Lt. David Mattingly, Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office.
Maize school administrators said Stiverson has been placed on paid leave.
"Any time that we have an incident, we take it very seriously. We'll investigate it. If a staff member or a student is involved, often times until that investigation is completed, they're not allowed back to school," said Maize Schools Superintendent Doug Powers.
Stiverson is listed as a social studies and physical education teacher at Maize High School, as well as an assistant baseball coach.

At Maize High School, as in the entire Maize school district, we believe
that students and staff should be provided a safe and supportive learning environment.
Last night a school employee was arrested after making some disturbing comments to another staff member about violence toward the school. The threat was immediately turned over to our district police and local law enforcement for further investigation.
All precautionary safety measures were put in place to ensure student and staff safety. The Maize USD 266 Police Department, the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office and central office administration were notified immediately. A search of the building was made by district police, and there is no indication that the threat that was made by the staff member was valid.
Please be assured that the appropriate disciplinary action will be taken with the staff member following BOE policy, with our foremost concern being the safety and well-being of our entire student body.
