AKRON, Ohio May 17 2013 — A University of Akron police officer shot and killed a 64-year-old man during a traffic stop this morning after the driver reportedly pulled a handgun.
The shooting occurred at about 11 a.m. off campus on Wolf Ledges Parkway, south of Thornton Street, according to a news release from the school's police department.
A detective with the Akron Police Department said city police also responded to the scene after the university officer issued a call for help over his radio.
The detective said he did not know what instigated the shooting. He said officers from both departments are at the scene investigating.
The UAPD officer had pulled the car over on a routine stop because of an improper registration. As he approached the vehicle, the driver produced a handgun, causing the officer to fire, the news release said. The department did not release the name of the driver, identified as a white male.
The officer will be placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation, according to the news release. The name of the victim will be released following identification by the coroner and notification of relatives.
